Earth-Friendly Sunscreens
by Julie Peckham
Q: Are there earth-friendly sunscreens?
A: Yes!
While some sunscreens can do damage to coral reefs and harm underwater life, you should use mineral-based sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide since they are less likely to harm coral reefs. Plus, they are better for your skin since they stay on the top layer of skin instead of soaking in and entering your body.
Avoid products that contain harmful chemicals including oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Additionally, it's best to stay away from spray sunscreens since the particles become airborne, entering the lungs of anyone around and ending up in pools or lakes when the wind blows them. The best way to avoid using as much sunscreen is to cover up with wide-brimmed hats, rash guards, and other clothing.
